So I thought I would take a walk down memory lane and talk about a time near and dear to my heart…..the 80s. I was born in 72 so the 80s were my time, my coming of age, teenage years. I have a lot of fond memories from the 80s as well as, after looking back, not so fond memories as well. As I look back there are things that remind me of events in time I enjoyed, then there are others where I just have to say “What in the HELL were we thinking.” It was a time where some of the old died after the 80s but some things still live on even today. A time when most of us had red and black bomber jackets and parachute pants. We had our first girlfriend or boyfriend, lost our virginity, saw our first porn or dirty magazine, or stayed up late to watch the Skin-A-Max shows because we just couldn’t believe that was on cable T.V. with the onset of HBO, Cinemax, and Showtime. A time of experimenting for some, partying for others, and for some of us a little of both. There were the bandana around the legs, big hair, and glamour rock, Pop Rocks and Caleaco Vision. So I figured I would break this up in to categories and list a few things from each. It’s not an all inclusive list so if I missed your favorite I’m sorry, feel free to comment and remind us all. So let’s begin.
Our first category is toys. I’ll try my best to include the women in this list as well. Who remembers the cabbage patch dolls? And their loveable cousins the Garbage Pail Kids? I think at some point every girl wanted an Eazy Bake Oven and every boy had a collection of G.I. Joe and Star Wars figures and accessories. Of course there were the annoying Care Bears and the Glow Worm and friends. How about your Hot Looks Dolls and Masters Of The Universe Figures?
Or better yet, Micro Machines and My Little Pony. Then of course there was the Lite Brite and Rainbow Brite. And of course Strawberry Shortcake, scratch and sniff stickers, and the markers that smelled like different flavors. Who could ever forgot Teddy Ruxpin and of course the never ageing Barbie. The Kool-Aide Beverage Maker, Legos, and Stretch Armstrong! Who had the Play-Doh Barber Shop? Of course there was the Rubik’s Cube which later turned in to the Triangle and other shapes. And when you couldn’t figure out how to get all the colors back you just took it apart and put it back together right or got it as close as you could then peeled the offending stickers off and put them in the right spot!!!!
And of course at some point everyone had Sea Monkeys. Who didn’t love the Slip N’ Slide? That is until you laid it over a rock not knowing and slid down it scraping your wet body over the covered rock. OWWWHHHH.
That brings me to my next cagegory……Games. Atari changed our worlds forever. Then came the NES and by then we were all experts at gaming systems playing Pong and Duck Hunt. We could walk into the mall sit down at the Arcade games and be masters of Pac Man, Mrs Pac Man, Space Invaders, Donkey Kong, Tron, Space Ace, and Dragon’s Lair. Then there was Dig Dug, Q-Bert, Centapede, Tetris, Frogger, and Asteroids. And who could forget Galaga and Mario Bros. Then of course there is the board games such as Scrabble, Twister, Life, and Monopoly. Candyland, Hungry Hungry Hippo, Rockem Sockem, Axis & Allies, Sorry, Clue, Stratego, Battleship, and the man with the nose that lights up in Operation.
Now comes the cartoons. Of course I have to start with my favorite G.I. Joe and now you know, because knowing is half the battle. Next there were the Hana-Barbara cartoons like CAPTAIN CAAAAVE MAN, Scooby-Doo, He-Man, Jem, The Care Bears, and Danger Mouse. My Little Pony and yes there was a Pac Man cartoon. Pound Puppies and Rainbow Brite. And of course those little blue smurfs, smurfette was one happy woman and Spider-man too. We had Strawberry Shortcake and Thundercats, Transformers and the Wuzzles.
Ahh T.V. Shows. Wonderful T.V. brought us so many shows. They had all the boys drooling over them daisy dukes in the Dukes of Hazzard and everyone wondering “Who Shot J.R.?” in Dallas. Of course there was Growing Pains with Blossom, 21 Jumpstreep for all you Jonnie Depp fans, and the A-Team “I love it when a plan comes together.” Who can forget the alien who loved to eat cats: ALF and What you talking about willis: Different Strokes. The crazy antics in Night Court, and oh those lovely bathing suit laden women in Baywatch. Then of course there were the funny older ladies of Golden Girls, and our man who couldn’t stay in one place in Quantum Leap. Then there was Remington Steele, Nanoo nanoo Mork and Mindy, Mrs Garrat and The Facts of Life, Scarecrow and Mrs King, the rich kid from Silver Spoons, Roseanne, Saved By The Bell, All In The Family, and Full House. Simon and Simon, Cagney and Lacy, and that very cool car Knight Rider. Bussom Buddies, Charles in Charge, T.J. Hooker, Tales From The Crypt, The Cosby Show, and Designing Women.
Who can forget Doogie Houser, Magnum P.I, and Mamma’s Family? And of course, Matlock, Wonder Years, and Who’s The Boss. Then there was Falcon Crest, Fall Guy, Miami Vice, the stuttering Max Headroom, ER, Family Matters, Family Ties and that little guy from Webster. Can’t forget Coach, and the place where everyone knows your name: Cheers, Taxi, Punky Brewster, the superhero who couldn’t land The Greatest American Hero, and we can’t forget Star Trek The Next Generation and the Simpsons. Then there was Highway To Heaven and Hillstreet Blues.
